Back in the 1980's United had a pilot strike. Right as the strike was over, I had to fly from SF to Portland for a meeting. The company had booked me on Air Cal, but there was a United flight a little earlier, and I wanted the miles on United. United was just in the first day or two of cranking back up after settling thd strike, getting planes positioned, etc, and hardly anybody would have reserved for this flight. So I went to the ticket counter and asked if they could take my Air Cal ticket, and the agent said "Sure! seat would go empty anyway!" (United would collect the fare from Air Cal)
