I’m sure this is apocryphal, but I’ve heard that the dead pan, “hello, folks, we’re in for just a bit of turbulence” calm demeanor that air plane captains adopt, is, or at least one time was, an attempt to emulate Chuck Yeager — the pilot who first broke the sound barrier back in the 40s. Yeager 100% had that personality, and almost came off as some sort of serene cowboy type who just happened to be an amazingly good, brave pilot. For a time, he was like a god in the aviation world. So the story goes that later pilots basically tried to sound like Yeager.
